Craigslist goes to $5 per car

November 21, 2013 by @cardealerpress

Starting 12/3 Craigslist puts down the hammer

It was just a matter of time before Craigslist started charging dealers for posting cars. Although at $5 per car this is more of a statement than a profit model.

Over the years we have created tools that help dealers post cars, but even the tools that were within the terms of use were almost impossible to maintain. Every time we had something that would work well, CL changed their system to keep out the spamming tools. So we stopped chasing it along time ago.

This has always been a difficult area for me since I believe in long term strategies for selling cars, not the quick fix. At the same time posting cars on Craigslist works(ed), and I can’t fault dealers for doing what they can to sell more cars. By adding a fee gate this will cause dealers to sit back and determine if there is a positive ROI with CL anymore. My guess would be no, and by design from CL. Or at the very least it will be a matter of choosing the cars that are good sellers instead of repeated spamming of every vehicle in stock.

Bulk posting is an option

IF you want to post 500 adds per month at $5 per add (no discounts here), you can bulk post.
